PARTAGAS CIGARS

Partagas cigars are well renowned in the cigar industry for being one of the very best, full strength Cuban cigars. The man credited with bringing them to market, Don Jaime Partagas y Ravelo, was a Catalan who was born in 1816. He was the son of a tailor, Jaume Partagas and his wife Teresa Ravelo. Don Jaime immigrated to Cuba in 1831 where he worked for Joan Conill, a businessman in Lloret de Mar.

In 1845, Don Jaime established his factory, La flor de Tabacas de Partagas, at 1 Cristina Street in Havana. This allowed Don Jaime to own and operate some of the top tobacco producing plantations in the Vuelta Abuja region.

When making his blends, Don Jaime was able to choose from top grade ingredients, ensuring that his highest quality cigars were always among the best made in Cuba. He was also an innovator who experimented with numerous ideas regarding fermentation and tobacco ageing.

Additionally, Don Jaime was seen as a trailblazer as he was among the first and most celebrated owners to hire readers to entertain the torcedores (Cigar rollers) in his factory.

In 1868, his son Jose Partagas took over the business after his father was found murdered on one of the family’s plantations. Partagas changed hands several times after this, most notably in 1916 when it was purchased by Cifuentes, Pego y Via.

This is when the firm became a powerhouse. It acquired brands such as Ramon Allones, Bolivar and La Gloria Cuban, as well as launching the Cifuentes brand. By 1958, Cifuentes was second only to the H Upmann company in exporting Cuban cigars, controlling 25% of the export market.

Partagas has enjoyed an immensely popular reputation, making the company the second best selling brand of Cuban cigars after Montecristo.

Partagas now produces and distributes more than 10 million cigars annually and the old Partagas Factory in Havana has been renamed Francisco Perez German. It remains a well visited tourist destination for cigar aficionados travelling in Cuba.
