Romeo y Julieta Cigars History

Romeo y Julieta is a fantastic brand of Cuban cigars of a medium strength. The brand, established by Inocencio Alvarez and Manin Garcia in 1875, is based upon the famed tragedy of Shakespeare’s star crossed lovers.

Romeo y Julieta won several awards and medals between 1885 and 1900, most of which are prominently displayed on their logo. However, the cigar line experienced an even bigger explosion in popularity after it was purchased by Jose “Pepin” Rodriguez Fernandez and his company, Rodriguez, Arguelles y Via, in 1903.

Pepin, who had previously headed up the Cabanas factory in Havana, was a well travelled gentleman who spent his time moving between Europe and the Americas. He was well known for being aggressive in promoting his brand as well as owning a famous horse, appropriately named Julieta, which he entered in races around the world. The success of this horse was also used to promote the cigar line.

Sir Winston Churchill, a former prime minister of the United Kingdom, was perhaps the brand’s most well-known fan. As a result, Romeo y Julieta’s flagship vitola is named in Churchill’s honour, a long 7” by 47-ring gauge cigar known as the Churchill. This shape and size is now a standard industry offering.

In 1954, at the age of 88, Pepin passed away, just 5 years before the end of the Cuban revolution. Romeo y Julieta is still produced in Cuba today, with the brand recognised as one of the country’s top selling cigars.
