Every year, one date is burned into the schedules of Habanos enthusiasts. The Festival del Havana is unlike any other international event for stimulation of participants’ palates and minds.
Daily events included Simon Chase’s Master Lecture called “Origin and evolution of Aluminium Tubes for Habanos”. Seminars for participants included a cigar rolling class, marrying Habanos with coffee, brandy, tequila and other products, and a Habanos and chocolate pairing seminar. This year’s winner of the Habano Sommelier contest was Juan Jesus Machin from the hotel Caribbean in La Habana.
2022 cigars are less grand than in the past. With one exception, new offerings are more directed to the connoisseur than the aristocrat. The Exception is a Montecristo No.2 Gran Reserva, following the Cohiba Robusto. Less expensive offerings generated more buzz and included new regular production cigars: The H.Upmann Half Corona and Partagas Serie D4 and D5.
Edicion Limitadas were popular among connoisseurs. The Offerings for 2022 have proved to be more popular this year than those from years past. The three offerings include: Ramon Allones Allones Extra, Hoyo de Monterrey Short Pyramide, Cohiba 1966 (6.5 x 52)
Private events during the festival continue gaining popularity and prestige. One event was the tasting of Rafael Gonzales Coronas Extra and Macallan both from 1974. The event which included connoisseurs from four continents was more of an intellectual exercise than a hedonistic tasting.
Though this year’s new product offerings were less grand than the previous two years, the festival embraced its identity as an event for enthusiasts again. The Gala dinner, or Gala performance featured the Montecristo No.2 Gran Reserva and its auction benefitting the Island’s healthcare system raised 787,000 Euros.
