H.Upmann Cuban Cigars History
H.Upmann is one of the oldest and most storied Cuban cigar brands in the world. The company dates back to 1844, when banker Herman Upmann (Along with his brother August) first established an office branch in Havana. This gave Upmann the opportunity to ship cigars to Europe. These shipments became so popular that he then invested in a cigar factory, thus establishing the U.Upmann brand.
Renowned for quality and craftsmanship, the H.Upmann brand has won seven gold medals at various exhibitions over the last century. These have become part of the company’s logo, which also features the founder’s signature.
During hard economic times in the 1920s, the H.Upmann bank and the cigar business was sold to J.Frankau & Co. In 1935, H.Upmann changed hands again to newly established Menendez, Garcia y Cia. They continued the production of H.Upmann up until the Cuban Revolution in 1959, after which the tobacco industry was nationalised.
Ironically, the H.Upmann brand (Sold under the name of Demi Taste in the US) was allegedly the favourite cigar of United States President John F. Kennedy while he was in office and at diplomatic odds with Cuba. The night before Kennedy signed the Cuban trade embargo, he assigned Press Secretary Pierre Salinger to purchase every box he could find in the Washington D.C metro area. Salinger swooped up an impressive 1,200 cigars for the commander in chief.
Today, the H.Upmann Cuban cigar continues to be made in its original factory in Havana and still uses tobacco from the highly acclaimed Vuelta Abajo region.
