Dubai ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Makthoum, is known for making quick decisions. Since the general ban on smoking came into force, smoking is only allowed in bars which are completely separated from all the other rooms and which have their own staff, toilets, entrances and exits.
What is more, the air extracted from the smoking room must be expelled directly into the open and must not be allowed to enter the building’s ventilation ducts. Many bars had already been set up in this way, and needed only minor adaptations, but for some famous hotels implementing the new law was quite a struggle.
Where previously smoking had been allowed in four bars in a certain luxurious 7 star hotel, this was now limited to just one small bar. All three of the hotel’s main bars, including the world famous Skyview Bar, were designed with restaurants and smoking was simply banned overnight.
Hotels like the Ritz Carlton Dubai and its Library Bar and Lobby Lounge or the Lobby bar of the Atlantis were also seriously affected.
Fortunately in the years since the smoking ban was introduced, many new premium hotels have been built and every new hotel has set up smokers lounges that comply with the new rules.
The best known examples of this are the Monarch Hotel and its Diademas Cigar Lounge, the Address Hotel Dubai Marina with its Blends Bar and the newly opened Hotel Jumeirah Zabeel Saray on the Palm Jumeirah with its C-Club, the bar with the best choice of cigars in all Dubai.
Generally the locals, usually referred to as a “Emirati” like to smoke hookahs or shishas, but thanks to Dubai’s transformation into an international metropolis and the wealth that has been brought with it, cigars are growing in popularity.
It is rare for any cigars other than Habanos to be smoked in the UAE, even though it has been possible to buy Davidoff, Don Diego and Macanudo for the last four years.
