Quintero y Hermanos or Quintero and Brothers as it is known now and in the English speaking world, was founded in 1924 by Agustin Quintero and his four brothers.
The Quintero Cuban cigar’s blend of tobacco was an immediate commercial success for the brothers, both in Cuba and abroad. This is because the blend is unusual in that it holds a unique herbal flavour with a sweet aftertaste. Once made, the cigars are then left to ripen for several months before being marketed.
To produce the cigar, the Quintero brothers founded a small factory in the town of Cienfuegos, Cuba. Cienfuegos is near a tobacco growing region named Vuelta Arriba of the Remedios. As such, Quintero is one of a small handful of Cuban cigar brands not originating from the prime tobacco growing region of Vuelta Abajo.
Quintero y Hermanos, as it was still known then, grew larger in the 1940s and moved to a much bigger factory in Havana. They then began using the high-quality tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo growing region.
From here, the brand grew steadily, sales increased domestically as well as worldwide, with it being particularly popular in Spain.
After the Cuban cigar industry was nationalised, the Quintero brand was repositioned. The company, now part of the national system, stopped making handmade cigars and started to use machines instead.
In the latter part of the 20th century, Quintero and Brothers was the only Cuban machine made brand to be sold globally and their popularity in Spain never wavered.
In 2002, the Cuban government marketing organisation, Habanos S.A., chose to reposition the brand once again. They discontinued machine made cigars and returned to making only handmade cigars. The Quintero cigar now markets itself as being “totalmente a mano” (Totally handmade).
Currently, the brand’s cigars come in four sizes. These high quality, premium cigars, are medium to full bodied in strength with a short and medium filler blend of tobacco leaves from the Vuelta Abajo and Semi-Vuelta zones of the Pinar del Rio region of Cuba.
