SMELL VERSUS TASTE

How can we make the difference between taste and smell obvious? How can we distinguish if a cigar is tickling our sense of smell, or sending our taste buds into euphoria? That’s exactly what our experiment is about this time.

You will need a familiar cigar, pen and paper, time and access to your spice rack and other “olfactory resources”: small containers of cinnamon, pepper, coffee, cocoa, maybe cedar from a cigar box – be creative!

Make yourself comfortable, light your current favourite cigar and enjoy the smoke and its beguiling aroma for a few moments. Be aware of your impressions. What do you think you taste and smell? Make notes.

Halfway through the cigar, pick up the spices in turn and inhale (Be careful with pepper and cinnamon). After you have noted the scent, take another draw on the cigar. You will notice an abrupt change in how you experience it, and how the other scent has affected the taste.

This experience is particularly strong with pepper, cardamon or cocoa. With ground coffee, the result is always amazing. Repeat the process with your other chosen spices.

Make a note of your impressions and compare them with how you enjoyed the cigar without the sensory resources. Have fun tasting and discovering!
