THE BEST CIGARS BEGINNERS SHOULD TRY

While the cigar world is full of experts and connoisseurs, it is also welcoming to beginners, who are often more open to new trends and can enjoy learning the art of cigars.

We welcome many beginners to our shop, often looking for a recommendation for a special occasion, or perhaps just wanting to see what all the fuss is about.

Unlike cigarettes, cigars are not inhaled, and their texture and aroma blends smoothly on the palate.

We recommend that beginners start with the basics, trying some of the famous Cuban cigars. Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Bolivar, and Hoyo de Monterrey, to name just a few, are excellent starting points.

Once the customer becomes more familiar with cigars and identifies their favourite blend of Cuban cigar, we will work with them to discuss other characteristics, including length, thickness, age and edition.

We think of cigars like art. Each one is handmade and unique, and should be enjoyed as an experience, much like a piece of music or a limited-edition wine.

Once a beginner learns about their preferred style of cigar, it can quickly become part of their lifestyle, and they enjoy cigars at many different points of their life – for special occasions, but also every day.

This is the case for both beginners and long-time cigar lovers – they both enjoy bringing the lifestyle and flavours of Cuba to the everyday. Beginners sometimes gravitate towards the cheapest cigar, and while this is a good option for some, it is not usually the most rewarding and does not offer value for money. If budget is a concern, we recommend going for the cheaper Cuban cigars rather than just cheap cigars, as their quality is far superior. The best cigars for beginners are the coronas length with light to medium strength. These are the most familiar sizes and shapes for both new world Cigars and Cuban Cigars. Coronas are straight-sided cigars, with an open foot and a closed rounded head. The Cuban standard for that size is 5 5/8 inches long with a 42-ring gauge. These cigars last for around twenty to thirty minutes, allowing for a comfortable smoking experience that doesn’t overwhelm.

The 10 most popular cigars for beginners are the following:

  • Montecristo Number 4
  • Montecristo Number 5
  • Cohiba Siglo I
  • Cohiba Siglo II
  • Romeo y Julieta Petit Churchill
  • Punch Coronation
  • Bolivar Petit Royal
  • Guantanamera Cristales
  • Trinidad Coloniales
  • Montecristo Petit Edmundo

Each of these cigars make a lovely choice either smoked on one’s own or in company of friends and family.

All those cigars can be accompanied by a drink of your choice, although wines and spirits are often an excellent match, as the tastes and aromas blend and complement one another.
